Provence – A legend and dream destination

Provence is a legend and a dream destination for many. Provence charms every visitor with its spectacular lavender fields, beautiful villages and cities, outstanding monuments, colorful farmers markets, or delicious “ratatouille”, “bouillabaisse”, and “aioli” part of its irresistible Mediterranean cuisine.

Large choice at the farmers’ market

For centuries, during their free time, locals in the South of France have been playing passionately “petanque” (French bocce ball) with great skills under large plane trees before having a “pastis” ( traditional anis aperitif served with water and ice) at the local café.

Provence and Languedoc are contiguous and have been major crossing roads through history between northern Europe, Italy, the Mediterranean, and the Hispanic peninsula.

There are still today many impressive vestiges from the Celtic, Roman, and Medieval time to be admired in Provence, like the Pont du Gard, the tallest Roman aqueduct built 2000 years ago over the Gardon river, or the city of Nimes, Roman capital of Provence with beautiful Roman arena and temple.

Les Baux de Provence was a powerful city and one of the most impressive and spectacular fortress of Provence. Perched on top of a rock with abrupt cliffs, it was known as impregnable and played a major role in history. Unfortunately after siding with the Protestants, in 1600 the inhabitants were forced to dismantle the majestic castle.

It is impossible to mention all the remarkable places of Provence, but a few are especially unique, like Avignon and its grandiose Palace of the Popes, or Saint-Remy de Provence  where Nostradamus was born, a lively picturesque village with a popular Wednesday farmers’ market.

Another admirable city is Uzes, a medieval city and the oldest Duchy of France with its renowned “place du marche” surrounded with arcades, its historic castle still owned today by the Duke of Uzes , and its cathedral overlooking the valley down below.

The list could continue with Beaucaire and Tarascon castles, Orange Roman theather, the amazing cities of Aix en Provence, Marseilles and so on…
